My well is over 100 feet deep and I was afraid that an air lift would not efficiently lift sand that was suspended in water all the way to the surface. This bailer is similar to an air lift in that it uses air to liquefy the sand into a slurry, and then drops it into my bailer bucket. When the bailer is full, I winch it to the surface, empty it out and repeat. The inside diameter of my well casing is just over 6 inches. The bailer is made out of the next smaller size pipe that will fit snugly inside the casing. The closest piece of pipe that I had in my scrap pile was 5-1/4 outside diameter and 27 inches long so that’s what I used. The difference in diameters is 3/4 inch so that means about 3/8 inch slop around the bailer for the sand slurry to be carried by rising air bubbles into the bailer. It is working but it is too slow so I’m going to experiment and see if a 1/4 pipe extension will liquefy the sand better.
I’ll edit the title as there was no part 2. I did weld the coupler on the end of the bailer and I tried the 1/4 pipe extender. I didn’t bother with another vid since there really wasn’t a noticeable improvement. The bailer did work and I got the sand out. If you have an atv, you could remove a rear tire and use it as a capstan winch. Make sure the other rear tire is locked up by applying the brake and/or wheel chocks. With the other tire removed and jacked up off the ground, you could loop the cable around the rim and use it as a motorized winch. That’s assuming you have a differential rear end. If you have a live axle, then both rear wheels would have to be off the ground. Winching the bailer up to empty it out seemed to be the most time consuming part so if you can figure out a way to safely motorize that part of the operation, you’d save a bunch of time. Anyway, it worked and just in time too. I was getting a bit ripe.
