This farmer in Gadag district of Karnataka has got energy and water freedom on 17 July 2013.
There is telephone connection and cell towers are there in this remote village but no electricity connection to all villagers. As per Government of India, this village is electrified on papers as just a grid line going in village qualifies it to become “electrified” but in reality many such villages are there where all of them or at least majority of them do not have electricity connection.
18years back this farmer started farming and till 4years back also he was getting water from a canal which is connected to a river.
Due to climate change rainfall is improper and due to urbanization, demand for drinking water has been ever increasing and water even contains floride. These 3factors severely impacted his livelihood and he has explored all the possible options including running pump set on alterator energized by a tractor and then by generator and also ran behind government electricity department to only realise that he need to spend Rs.3.5lak to get free electricity which he never asked and willing to pay like we urbanites pay for what we use. All these have made him to realise such alternatives are not viable to do farming. He and many such farmers have even decided to leave from the farming profession in which case we could have been the cause for food shortage and food inflation.
The most shocking part of this story is many solar companies and their dealers have exploited (rather than explored) to just sell what they want in the form of solar lights for homes and streets through government sponsored programmes or through loans offered by the banks in this village and many such villages and the most of them never understood what the villagers need. This is because offering a solution to water pumping through solar energy is not impossible but complex to understand the need, expensive to farmers and so on. But as per our survey and ground report these are myths because we could see an young farmer explaining us how his motorcycle has recently got a tube less tyre by replacing the conventional tube and tyre as the rural infrastructure is so poor that the tube getting punctured can be a nightmare for farmers as they have to again walk along with motorcycle to a mechanic who might be there some kilometres away.As an urbanite, I do not know about such as I hardly face this “tyre puncture” problem and may be because of this kind of ignorance, we “stupid urbanites” have been doing the little to understand the needs of farmers eventhough we are born in a country where majority of the population depends on Agriculture as the primary source of income. When we spend less time itself to understand the needs, where can we get the time to find a solution?
I am very disturbed as I could see this situation and now not really bother whether competitors explore such villages and so on since we have now decided to share this info at a nominal cost to pump and solar companies at a nominal cost to meet our expenses for reaching out to the last mile since the scope of work is enormous and even can create more rural employment(as I have also seen negligible sharing of the such by many solar companies and their dealers just by thinking when I discovered such and took pain why should I pass this Golden egg kind of opportunity to others and so on..)
When tyre companies such as MRF can offer such a tube less tyre solution meeting the needs of rural farmers why not solar companies can offer such solutions? Even tube less tyre is expensive than a tyre+tube.
In sales I just know 3 simple things:- Money, Authority and Need. When I could see the need and authority and farmer just goes back and forth on money factor I just need to help him to buy by paying at an affordable price either in on cash and carry or on lease and carry terms!
We were surprised to see the smile and relief not just in this farmer’s face but a big hope in more than 2000 farmers who have come to this unique feet of getting energy and water freedom as many of them could not believe that energy efficient pump energized by solar energy can ensure sustainable farming for them.
