In this video I want to show you how a natural pond that I built has developed so far. Today, priority is given to the fish stock, part of which are koi. I already made several videos about the pond, which can be found on my channel or by clicking on these links. The pond was built without a liner. Existing silt and clay as well as the use of rainwater ensure that the pond does not dry out. The pond as it is now was build 3 years ago. Since then many different plants and species have settled without doing much to it. Fish were put in after about 1.5 years, so the ecosystem was previously able to build up sufficiently and form a bio-sludge. So a few koi are living in this pond for 1.5 years now. There are no filters, pumps or ventilations used and I just wanted to show you how the koi are doing. With an estimated visibility of about 40 cm which 1,3 feet, the water of course is not as clear as in a conventional koi pond, so the animals are not always visible. However, this has a positive effect on the welfare of these animals. Their colors have improved significantly, after I had bought the koi out of a small conventional pond. In more turbid water, the koi are able to hide and avoid stress that way, which again can have a positive effect on their health. Now I can’t give any medical prove since the animals have never been caught and examined, but no disease symptoms are noticed so far. The koi like to eat the countless water fleas and organisms cavorting in the pond water. This protein food contributes to a good growth of the fish. According to koi experts it is much better for the koi then dry pellet food. When I got the koi they were about 7 years old and haven’t grown the last years the pre owner had them. The rather small size of the fish of about 40 cm (1,3 feet) was probably due to the small size of the pond. Since I put the koi in their new natural environment I was able to notice a significant increase in growth. So now some are more than 50cm, 1,7 feet long. The many microorganisms also take sufficient care about the biological water purification and decomposition of the fish waste. From time to time I feed the koi with pellet food. It took a while before they accepted the food, even though they were used to it from your previous environment. They seemed to be scared by their new big pond, but now however they got used to it. The different water and the switch from about 5 to about 400 cubic meters of pond volume of course was a major change for the animals. Now they got used to it and obviously enjoy their generous home as well as the existing aquatic plants. They like seeking for edible between the plants or relax under the lily pads. They also like to search through the ground in the shallow water areas so I had general concerns that the water is becoming all turbid. But however, I must say that the water is more clearer with each passing year. A small population of fish which doesn’t overfill the pond enables the ecosystem to work well. In the future I would like to catch out all other fish like gold-orfes and tenches that have been put in so far and replace them with koi. As a landscaper I am interested in this project and I would like to know if these fish survive permanently and healthy without filters. Without the need for electricity, UV clarification, ozone systems and costly maintenance work, this big pond can be operated environmentally friendly and almost for free. My conclusions about this alternative pond don’t mean to offend the conventional koi keeping, I just like sharing my observations and experiences with others. Changes or new features for this pond will gladly be caught on video and published on my channel. In addition to videos of the construction and maintenance of this pond there are more videos about gardening and landscaping topics on my channel. Thank you for your interest, I would be glad about comments in the form of hints, questions or tips. Thanks for watching.
