Loaded with negative reviews and complaints stating the hose will blow above 40-45psi. Is that true or is this pump a good deal for $7.99?
After almost a month of waiting, this pump was finally restocked at my local Harbor Freight. Initial impressions are that the pump is decently built. The PSI gauge has the look of a gauge in a sports car. It is mounted to the tube – unlike the gauge on most other pumps which are almost always mounted to the base. The base itself is considerably smaller than comparable pumps and only has a nub in place of a 3rd foot. This affects the stability of the unit and makes it slightly harder to pump, but doesn’t make a significant impact. The gauge itself is fairly accurate. It is off about 5psi (low) at 80psi. Pumping the unit is where the ‘cheap pump’ feel comes into play. Above about 50psi the pump handle is very difficult to push. The missing 3rd foot comes into play at this point as your leverage is limited to the two side feet on the pump. That said, it does air the tire well adding around 2psi per pump on my 700×38 tires. The housing is metal which is contradicted by many of the negative reviews. The negative reviews also mentioned the hose issue, but I found the hose to be thicker than described by others. That is possibly why it was unavailable for a month. Maybe they upgraded the hose…who knows. Either way, for $7.99 (9.99 – 20% coupon) it appears to be an ok purchase.
-Fairly accurate gauge
-Nice volume per pump for the price
-Small based makes it wobbly
-Hard to pump over 50psi
-Dual head design makes for a tight fit between spokes
Overall I think this may be an ok buy considering the generous 90-day warranty provided by Harbor Freight. It clearly isn’t a replacement for a high end pump like a Bontrager. If you can afford a better pump – buy it. If you need a cheap beater pump this appears ok. I would purchase this over a Bikemate pump from Aldi simply due to the gauge being more accurate. Most important is to remember to use a 20% discount coupon if you decide to buy!
