Today we’re going to teach you how to install a 3-legged vertical mounted pump to a pressure washer. These instructions will work for all 3-legged vertical mounted pressure washer pumps, regardless of the model, but in this demonstration we’ll be using a Himore PWVR24/2.3. The equipment you will need are the mounting bolts and nuts from the pump previously installed on your pressure washer, a half inch line wrench, a half inch socket and also a ratchet. Included with your purchase from APW Distributing are a shaft key and 3 optional spacers. the first thing you’ll want to do is prop up your pressure washer to allow more space to work underneath it, In this case we’re using 4×4′s to hold the pressure washer up, but you can use anything as long as it’s sturdy and secure. Next, you’ll want to clean the shaft of the engine using a rag with a solvent sprayed on it. DO NOT spray the solvent directly onto the shaft because it can damage the oil seal located at the bottom of the engine. Now, we will try a dry fit of the pump to determine if spacers are necessary for installation. Now inspect each leg individually to determine if there is a gap between the frame and the bottom of the leg. If there is a gap, like shown above, then the spacers included in your kit will be necessary for installation. The reason for this is that when you torque the bolts down at the end of installation a lot of force will be pulling on the leg, causing the pump to tilt, but the shaft prevents it from tilting and the result is a broken leg or a broken shaft flange, which is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. In order to save yourself a headache while installing the shaft key you will want to line up the key groove to the direction you will be installing the pump from. since this is a reverse head pump and I’m attacking it from the rear, we want to align the groove up between the inlet and outlet tubes. We’ll want to do the same with the engine shaft, but that can be a little bit more difficult to twist. So, if you can’t get it by hand, just pull gently on the pull start and get it to spin to the direction you want it. Now, here comes the tricky part: you’re going to want to hold the shaft key into the groove with your index finger. hold it in a way so that the force of the pump going onto the shaft does not push the shaft key too far up the groove, which can break out the flange of the shaft slot on the pump, also not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. And now for the installation of the pump: you will want to slide the shaft key into the groove of the pump shaft slot, and slide it on up until it makes contact with the bottom of the frame or the spacers if spacers were necessary for your installation. Line the holes up with the frame and engine, then prop the pump up with a 4×4 or something similar to keep it from sliding back down the shaft when installing your bolts. Now, without using any tools, install the mounting bolts that connect the engine to the pump with the frame between the two, and only hand tighten them. With all the bolts hand tightened, it’s time to check to see if the shaft spins freely without binding. If there is no binding, then you are free to grab the half inch line wrench and the half inch socket and tighten down the mounting bolts down snugly. Do not over-tighten the bolts, just make sure that they are snug enough to keep them from vibrating loose while operating the machine.
