Months after the US-led invasion of Iraq, sanitation remains one of the major problems in Baghdad, with areas where sewerage is visible on the streets
Much of the city’s sewage infrastructure was already badly under-repaired before the war, and the vibrations from bombings and heavy vehicle movements have further damaged underground pipes.
With the hot summer beginning there is a real danger of outbreaks of disease, such as cholera.
The US administration and is paying Iraqi engineering comapnies to fix the system, and some NGOs are involved in repair work.
But local Iraqis say the work is taking too long, and have complained of skin ailments and the spread of disease.
At one sewage pumping station in the Baghdad district of al-Shurta Khamsa, workers from the Al Sabah engineering company were at work on Wednesday.
So far they have managed to restart three of the stations four pumps.
The company’s four engineers are working twelve hour shifts to try to get the system working again.
